SfN Statement on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity

As the world saw footage of the horrific death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN, last week, only the latest in the long history of violence against Black men, women, and children, there are a flood of emotions and reactions, including anger and grief. The protests in Minneapolis, around the U.S., and worldwide are expressions of generations of anger and hurt. The long history of racism and structural inequity that have a direct impact on generations of Black lives simply cannot be ignored.  

In times like these, it becomes even more important to restate our common values as they pertain to science. Core to SfN are the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity. SfN recognizes the need to put forth the effort to engage those who have been historically excluded—scientific advances are more impactful and significant if we engage all talented scientists in our collective research efforts. The inclusion of all who have historically been excluded is the heart of SfN’s diversity programs. And yet, we know there is more work to do. This moment is only a reminder of how far we have to go.  

SfN reaffirms its commitment to promoting diversity and fostering excellence; to recognizing that many talented scientists, especially those from minority groups have been excluded from our field; and to committing to do better. Our work is clearly far from over, and SfN continues to stand for the core values of equality, diversity, and respect for all.
