Michael Oberdorfer
A report in Nature suggests that neurogenesis in humans stops shortly after childhood. Earlier studies suggested that humans, along with several other mammals, generate neurons in the hippocampus throughout life, slowing over lifespan. However, recent observations by researchers at UCSF suggest otherwise. They looked at tissue from donors of various ages and observed that new neurons were not found in any sample beyond the age of 13. A number of questions have been raised regarding the tissue markers, the means of tissue preservation, etc, and more work is underway. Your thoughts?
