The European Union reinforces the need for animal research.

The BBC reports that the European Union, per their 2010 directive, plans to phase out animal testing, as they have for testing cosmetics, but, "It was still too early to ban tests on live animals for medical research."  This is in the face of a petition campaign by the animal activist group Stop Vivisection. The EU directive on animal research strictly adheres to The Three Rs, to replace, reduce and refine animal use in Europe.

Given the existing need for animal models for research on a wide range of conditions impacting on both humans and animals, and the pressing need for the development of a vaccine for COVID-19, the EU's continued support for animal-based research is essential.
