NIH decides not to move chimpanzees to retirement facility.

NIH will not be retiring some aging chimpanzees to Chimp Haven, a facility in Louisiana, for long term care of the animals, as originally planned . A recent statement by NIH director Francis Collins explains the rationale for the decision. The reason for the decision is based on the recommendation of a veterinary panel that concluded the animals are too old and frail to withstand the rigors of moving to a new facility.from their current locations.  Science reports the decision has stirred some controversy.
