Michael Oberdorfer
The latest budget kabuki is underway with a second government shutdown looming, although it may be brief one. According to the Hill, NIH would receive a $2 billion increase in the Senate proposal. The House has proposed a $1.1 billion increase for NIH, but it’s not clear that the House will reach agreement among themselves. Much remains to be done in both houses before a budget compromise emerges for the president who originally proposed a $5.8 billion decrease for NIH. Right now, the Senate budget vote has been held up by objections of one senator. Hopefully, at the end of the day something good will happen for the support of biomedical research.
