The New York Times and The Washington Post among others report the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has terminated a nicotine addiction study that had been underway since 2014 at its National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR.) The termination of the study came from reports of the death of four squirrel monkeys. The study had also drawn criticism from Jane Goodall and The White Coat Waste Project.

Dr. Scott Gottieb, head of the FDA said in a statement: “The FDA strengthens commitments to humane and judicious animal research and the termination of a nicotine study.”

Numerous researchers advocate that tobacco addiction research is a critically important priority However, this project may have lacked adequate oversight of the animal care, particularly the role of the contractor involved in the care of the animals. This and related issues are discussed in a nuanced statement by Speaking of Research.
