Nature Neuroscience reports the discovery of a new class of neurons, “rosehip neurons” in the outermost layer of the human cortex.

These small, bushy, GABAergic cells play an inhibitory role in the cortex, and appear to be unique to humans, not matching any cell type in the mouse cortex.

The work was done by researchers at the University of Szeged (Szeged, Hungary), the Allen Institute in Seattle, WA and the J. Craig Venter Institute, La Jolla, CA.

Science News provides a summary of the this work.

This is quite interesting and does raise questions about investigating therapeutic interventions in animal models and then extrapolating them to humans.

Inhibition is my jam! It’s so amazing that we are discovering more unique neurons to humans. Looking forward to the implications on health this discovery will have.
