Science reports that a letter from the Department of Health and Human Services inspector general’s office reveals NIH has asked federal investigators to review 12 potential instances of unreported foreign affiliations by researchers on NIH-funded projects at US institutions.

In the last five years, the Department of Health and Human Services (NIH’s parent agency) has referred a number of such cases to federal prosecutors.

The inspector general’s report has drawn the attention of Senator Grassley (R, IA) who wants to "protect the integrity of medical research from foreign threats.”

NIH has reported more than 50 other cases over the past five years for the inspector general for review. Senator Grassley further states that “foreign threats to our taxpayer-funded research and American intellectual property must be taken seriously,” a view shared by many others.

This scrutiny will not be going away time soon. Your thoughts?
